Grit, community, and why CrossFit is built for real people with real lives

Here's something worth knowing: a recent research study — yes, actual science — found a correlation between mental "grit" and people who do CrossFit.
In case you need a refresher, grit is the ability to persist and endure, staying focused on an end goal despite the roadblocks, challenges, and hurdles along the way — especially when the work it takes to get there isn't particularly enjoyable.
Which, when you think about it, sounds like a pretty useful skill for regular life too, doesn't it?
And there's more. Psychologists have found that being part of a community — especially one that's getting healthy or overcoming something difficult together — measurably increases a person's chances of success. As Henry Cloud put it: "Positive energy is contagious."
Grit and community. As it turns out, those two things are the whole foundation of what happens at CrossFit Una Stamus. And nobody understands why better than the coach who built it.
A lesson that started with a karate teacher
Long before he had a Ph.D. or a gym, the owner and head coach of CrossFit Una Stamus was a short, heavy kid who didn't really "do" sports.
Then he found karate. It was the first physical activity he genuinely enjoyed, and he got kinda good at it. Good enough that one day his teacher offered a rare piece of praise: he was "okay" at karate. From that teacher, that was high praise — about as close to a compliment as he ever gave.
But the teacher added something that would set the course for the next four decades: if he wanted to do something really big, he should focus on the mental, not just the physical.
For a teenager, that was heady stuff. What did anything mental have to do with getting good at something physical, like karate? He didn't understand it at the time — but he respected his teacher enough to trust the advice even without understanding it.
So away he went.
Four decades of chasing the mental side
That single piece of advice became a lifelong pursuit — one that carried him through a number of career endeavors, personal experiences, and fitness challenges over the years. It eventually led all the way to a Ph.D. in psychology, where he studied the exact thing his teacher had pointed him toward: grit, mental toughness, and what actually helps people persevere toward the goals that matter most.
But all that study eventually collided with the biggest, most real-life fitness challenge there is: trying to simply stay fit and healthy while getting older — with a life, kids, a career, and all the things that come with, well… real life.
It turned out the mental game his teacher pointed him toward was never really about mastering a martial art. It was about mastering the discipline to keep showing up, decade after decade, when life gets full and motivation runs thin.
The key that ties it all together
The conclusion he eventually arrived at is a simple one — and it's the philosophy CrossFit Una Stamus is built on.
Exercise isn't optional. Staying active is critical for anyone who wants to maintain a good quality of life into their later years. So if it has to be done anyway, it might as well be done somewhere you can:
- Have fun — because of the community
- Get the best results in the most efficient way — because of CrossFit
- Smile with your friends along the way — even when the workout absolutely sucks
That last part is grit in action: persevering through the tough stuff while keeping the end goal in mind. And the end goal, ultimately, is a longer, stronger, healthier life.
If you have to exercise anyway — and you do — you might as well do it somewhere you can have fun, get real results, and smile with your friends, even when the workout sucks.
Why CrossFit is a natural fit for real people
For anyone who barely has time in their day to exercise — a real person, with a real life and real challenges — CrossFit is a natural fit. It's exactly the situation Matthew found himself in when he knew he had to make a change for the sake of his kids and his own long-term health.
CrossFit is a methodology that encourages people to "embrace the suck" and push through workouts that genuinely test both mental and physical capacity. But here's the part that changes everything:
You never do it alone.
There's always a group. A team. A community. Whether it's the classmates sweating beside you, the fellow members cheering you on, or CrossFitters around the world you've never even met — you are never alone in it.
That's the power of community. And it's exactly what the research says makes the difference.
So what are you waiting for?
That karate teacher was right all those years ago: the mental game is where the real magic lives. It just took four decades — and building this community — to fully understand what he meant.
The good news is you don't have to take the long way to get there.
The grit you build here follows you into everything else. The community carries you when your own motivation runs low. And the results show up in your life, not just the mirror.
So here's the honest invitation, from a gym full of real people with real lives: just get here. Your life will be different.
